4 wonderful spots to discover Copenhagen from above

Tonight I will fly to China and until January, I will study in China and Taiwan, and travel around South East Asia. I am really happy to get the chance to see new countries, improve my Chinese language and let’s be honest, spend some real summer days at the beach (instead of the 2 weeks of summer in Copenhagen). Still, it is bittersweet. I love my life in Copenhagen, my friends, my jobs, my adventures around town and taking pictures of known places and faces. Leaving Copenhagen for over half a year is not the easiest thing to do.

For myself, I wanted to share a post about Copenhagen before I leave and before I start a new chapter of my life. Copenhagen has so many beautiful corners but for me, one of the best ways to discover the city is from above. My family came to visit last week and I was a tourist in my own town.. and I loved it! So that is why I wrote down 4 spots where you can see Copenhagen from a bird’s perspective and fall in love with the city all over again 🙂

#1 Marmorkirken

Of course.. this is number 1. I absolutely love this building, this place, this symmetric masterpiece, which is on my way home from work several times a week.

Right by the Queen’s Palace, you will find the most gorgeous church with a golden-green dome. Not many tourists know that you can get on top of the Marble Church though (and neither did I until one year ago). During the winter months, you can get to the top on a guided tour every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm. From 15th June until 31st August you can go up every day at 1pm. Make sure to get there on time, so you won’t miss the tour.

Address: Frederiksgade 4, 1265 Copenhagen

Since I haven’t been up there myself, here is a shutterstock picture (Marmorkirken is my absolute favourite building in Copenhagen, and I haven’t up there because I am waiting for a very meaningful day to go there 🙂 )

#2 Rundetaarn

In the heart of Copenhagen’s inner city, the Round Tower peaks through the roofs. It is probably the most famous tower in Copenhagen and a classic spot to enjoy a beautiful view over the city. The tower doesn’t have any stairs, but you slowly walk up a spiral walk to get to the top. The inside and the view from Round Tower is stunningly beautiful and Danish (which means minimalistic, white and empty) 😉

#3 Church of Our Saviour

In Christianshavn, you will find the Church of our Saviour in between the canals and lovely colourful streets. You can’t unsee the wonderful spiral, which apparently is made spinning the wrong way- which I myself, don’t see as a huge problem but the architect killed himself over it. So I heard.

I am really afraid of heights so it was a challenge to climb all the way up. Even the spiral. From the platform, you will find a spiralling walk to the very top of the church. It was so exhausting to climb the hundreds of stairs until the top, but the view on a clear and sunny day will be the best reward you can imagine. And this is coming from me, a girl who is quite afraid of heights and who froze for a couple of minutes while a slight panic attack came up (it is really high!) – but it was worth it!

#4 Tower of Christiansborg Palace

I usually avoid politics, but in a time of Trump, Trudeau Memes and Macron’s Facebook live streams,  it is difficult to entirely get away from all the political talk. Well so why not be at the very top of the parliament in Denmark, literally speaking. The tower of Christiansborg Palace is right over the Danish parliament and unlike the other viewpoints, it doesn’t cost any entry. Perfect when you want to be tourist in your own city but don’t want to pay 40kr to get up a tower 😉

At the entrance of the parliament, you can line up for the viewpoint. After a quick security check, two elevators will you take up to the top of Tårnet. The view from the tower is incredible and you can see all the sightseeing spots such as Marmorkirken or the City Hall. Go up there on a not so windy day, otherwise you will be blown off your feet 😉 But well you don’t have to pay an entry fee, so that’s not too bad then!

Address: Prins Jørgens Gård 1, 1218 Copenhagen

I hope you will enjoy discovering Copenhagen from above. It is one of the best feelings to be on top of the world and see how little and small everything is from up there. If you happen to visit on of the spots after this post, you can share it with me on Instagram 🙂

Although I am very excited for my upcoming semester and time in Asia, I will miss Copenhagen. I hope you will follow along my time in Asia and I promise, I will write about Copenhagen, its beautiful sights, places, and guides about living in Denmark, as soon as I am back ! Thank you so much for reading this article 🙂

If you want to escape the city a bit, get inspired for a road trip to Møns Klint in my last blog post 🙂
